I like to produce a rich vocabulary of themes. Texture is very important in my work and rough surfaces impose themselves on us initially in a rugged and foreboding sense. Scraping through textured surfaces bring out the underlying luminosity of the white canvas, giving it a sense of depth.

I use a substance called ‘matter’ which is produced by mixing powdered marble, sand and bone glue. This adds volume. By cutting into this texture of matter with violent and aggressive cuts, this suggests a threat and leaves the viewer with a powerful quality of unrest. This is a vehicle of expression and adds a third dimension of sculpture to my work.” - TAÏRA
